“To reach the masses, some sort of big organization (whether) domestic and foreign branch affiliation, is not necessary. To reach the growing number of students, some sort of pre-conformed set must be established as standards for the branch to follow. As a result all members will be conditioned according to the prescribed system. Many will probably end up as a prisoner of a systematized drill. Styles tend to not only separate men – because they have their own doctrines and then the doctrine became the gospel truth that you cannot change. But if you do not have a style, if you just say: Well, here I am as a human being, how can I express myself totally and completely? Now, that way you won’t create a style, because style is a crystallization. That way, it’s a process of continuing growth. To me totality is very important in sparring. Many styles claim this totality. They say that they can cope with all types of attacks; that their structures cover all the possible lines and angles, and are capable of retaliation from all angles and lines. If this is true, then how did all the different styles come about? If they are in totality, why do some use only the straight lines, others the round lines, some only kicks, and why do still others who want to be different just flap and flick their hands? To me a system that clings to one small aspect of combat is actually in bondage. This statement expresses my feelings perfectly: ‘In memory of a once fluid man, crammed and distorted by the classical mess.” Bruce Lee
Tom Hanks on Cloud Atlas: I am a lay historian by nature and I seek out an empirical reflection of what truth is. I want dates and motivations. I want the whole story. But, I’ve always felt unconsciously that all human history is that connection from person to person to person, and from event to event to event, and from idea to idea. For me, the movie actually in the voices of particularly Somni, in Doona Bae’s character, she actually gives a vocabulary to it that I think is quite profound. For example, in the beginning when she’s being examined by James D’Arcy, she says “Truth is singular. Versions of truths are mysteries.” I thought holy smokes, that’s the deepest thing I’ve ever heard anywhere and I tried to get through Carlos Castaneda. I tried to do that. Later on, when she’s literally saying the thing that is quoted by Susan Sarandon as the Abbess earlier on — “From womb to tomb, we’re all connected. Your choices reverberate through eternity.” — I think that is such a simple and profound explanation for how we are all connected that I had never thought of before. But now I’ve got it, so I think it actually supports this embracing of the mysteries that I had always been, that had been enough for me prior to making the movie. I have no comment.
I am a hypocrite. I post a lot on cops and how “not to talk to them” or assume they have power over you, etc. But when I got a ticket today, I reverted back to old school mode of being a suck up. I talked to him, I apologized for speeding, did a lil half cry thing that just comes naturally when I get caught at anything, and then I kissed his ass basically. I felt the integrity within myself slowly slipping away as I conceded my principles to get out of something with least effort. I was driving with no license though or registration (like always) and I did have a few dozen warrants out in that city, but still I caved and played nice to get out of jail and avoid the ticket for going 50 in a 35. I don’t know. I just feel like I need to admit that to gain my integrity back. Thanks diary. Cops suck, but the ones I meet seem really nice. I am conflicted. It’s just like having a best friend who is a statist. It’s possible maybe? But not really cause you don’t agree on first principles and that sorta means everything.
